HPDC automates product screening for information reported by HPD

Pre-screen HPDs for compliance with a variety of material health assessment and certification programs

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA, November 3, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Today, the Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPDC) introduced new capabilities for the HPD Builder and HPD Public Repository information management systems. This automates the time-consuming task of screening product information for compliance with various material health program criteria.

Introduced in 2012, the HPD Open Standard provides an accurate, reliable, and consistent reporting methodology for complex chemical, human, and environmental health information. To date, over 10,000 HPD reports have been published, providing an unprecedented level of detailed product information available to construction project design teams for use in product selection.

Using the automated “HPD Program Pre-Check” and the HPD archive in the HPD Public Repository, project team members in participating programs can easily and quickly find products that meet the material health criteria set for their project. For example, if a project wants to select products that do not contain a restricted list of chemicals, the HPD program’s pre-screening can automatically screen HPDs for compliance with these and other criteria.

“We have used HPDs as a fundamental information source in our material health protocol for a number of years and are pleased to be part of this pilot project,” commented Robin Guenther, Principal, Perkins&Will. “Automated screening with our custom criteria is a huge win for our project teams. It will save us a lot of time and also make it a lot easier to introduce material health practices with new team members.”

A project design team often reviews hundreds of products during the selection phase. “The time and expertise required to manually screen material health data has presented a significant impediment to broader adoption of material health practices,” said Wendy Vittori, Executive Director, HPDC. “With these new capabilities, a company can define the criteria once, and each member of the project team can apply them quickly and get immediate results using HPD program pre-assessment.”

The pre-screening of the HPD program also offers significant benefits for manufacturers. Through their HPD Builder private account, manufacturers can access program criteria and instantly see what their customers prefer in terms of material health product attributes. Screening against program criteria is automated in HPD Builder, giving manufacturers the same time-saving benefits as project teams. And with this knowledge, manufacturers can provide specific feedback to their product design teams when improvements are warranted.

“Humanscale is deeply committed to improving the material health of our products. HPDs are an invaluable resource for collaborating with our supply chain and product design teams. Automating the screening of this data will save us significant time and provide new insights into our product development process,” said Jane Abernethy, Chief Sustainability Officer, Humanscale.

The innovative HPD Program Pre-Check feature is currently in pilot implementation and is expected to be fully released in early 2023. General HPDC members are eligible to register their programs to participate in the HPD Program Pre-Check. Contact for more information [email protected].

HPDC is a non-profit membership association with over 360 organizational members representing the entire spectrum of the construction industry: architects, designers, building owners, manufacturers, consultants, tool developers and others, all with a common goal of improving the transparency of information and material health the built environment. Since its inception in 2012, the HPD Open Standard has established itself as the industry standard for reporting building product content and associated health information, with over 10,000 publicly available HPD reports. HPDC members are committed to continually improving the performance of the construction industry through transparency, openness and innovation in the practices of reporting, disclosure, specification and selection of construction products.
